Well, we’ve been promising that we’d have a Friday Happy Hour, and here it is, at On Tap’s brand-new location, no less! Things will kick off around 7:30 pm and go to late! If you can, bring your SO, a friend, or a colleague, and let’s make this a Happy Hour to remember!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: It has come to our attention that Michael Gaines, a member of Taipei’s expat community, has had an accident and now needs our help. Read on:

“On Friday, March 11, Michael sustained serious head injuries. He is in Ren’ai Hospital in Taipei in stable condition. It is not exactly clear what happened. Michael was alone. Strangers called an ambulance after finding him unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk near the bottom of a steep flight of stairs.”

He spent three days in the ICU in critical-to-stable condition. He suffered skull fractures and bleeding of the brain. He is stable now and has been moved out of the ICU. Doctors say he will be in the hospital for a few weeks.

There’s no way to know how much brain damage he has sustained. At best he is probably looking at another month in the hospital and no telling how much rehabilitation. The doctor thinks it will be at least 6 months before he is able to work. He requires 24-hour attention from the family (which consists of only the wife, Alicia, and their 2-year-old daughter. The wife is Singaporean so no Taiwanese family support).

That means the wife can’t work and that nurses have to be hired. We hope people will consider donating something to help this unfortunate young couple. We (Michael’s friends) are helping in anyway that we can in the meantime, but there is no way they will be able to get by financially on their own.”

Michael may not be a Forumosan (but then again, maybe he is!), but that isn’t important. What’s important is that he and his family need some help. Can we all pitch in and help please? We’ll be bringing a collection jar to the Happy Hour, and any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.
